Solution to talent shortage? Build your own talent by investing in learning. Successful lawyers and law practices don’t just buy in talent to fill capability and skill gaps – they build capability themselves – with robust approaches to on the job learning and continuing legal education. This is a hot topic for legal educators and lawyers alike and in fact will be explored at the October CLEAA conference.
Firms finding it hard to recruit talent should check they have not fallen into the trap of seeing structured learning activities as a cost or expense instead of an investment. Even firms that invest in professional HR often fail to provide the bandwidth or budget for effective learning and development beyond meeting minimum mandatory CPD requirements. If learning and education budget matched the marketing and professional indemnity insurance budgets then much of the talent shortage would disappear.
